If you live on Earth, you have heard about the deal between Country Music Legend Garth Brooks and mega super store, Wal-Mart. Brooks, who has always proved to be a marketing innovator, has inked a deal that is sure to set the music industry on fire. Recently parting from his label, Capitol Records, the deal grants sole distribution rights to Wal-Mart.

What can we learn from Garth? First, he’s all about the business, his fans, and marketing, something I speak about repeatedly both on my weekly radio show as well as in my book, The Indie Guide To Music, Marketing and Money. While Brooks has not recorded a new CD since 2001, his least successful by Brooks’s standards, this marketing genius still captures headlines, creating urgency for his music.

How does he do it? Brooks learned from his time in the trenches, when every label rejected him sometimes twice, it’s all about the business. Brooks took the business very seriously and handled his contract negations with incredible savvy and skill. One of the most important negations he made was to make sure he owned the masters to his own music.

Because Brooks owned the music, he received a higher percentage of the gross, which helped insure he covered the recoupable costs the labels receive. Ultimately, whether he was still with Capitol or not, he owned his music and that enabled him to be able to do whatever he wanted with it.

A big mistake label seekers make when in negotiations is to let go of their rights in order to get the “prize.” If you give up your rights and your label shelves the project and drops you, anything you created is theirs, even if you wrote the music. You can’t take it with you unless you have a lot of money and a really great lawyer. But even so, the label has the final say.

There is a lot we can learn from the masters and this is one lesson I hope everyone is able to hold on to; learn the business and always get legal advice and counsel before you go into contract negotiations. If you don’t know a really great entertainment attorney, I have a few I would highly recommend: Jordan Keller and Miller Hogan of Lassiter, Tidwell and Hildebrand. Jordan, whose clients include the Backstreet boys will be on my show in a few weeks, so don’t miss it! To a better day in every way.

Music is such a pleasurable activity, that nobody wants to believe that there could be any downside to using it to earn cash. When money is involved music becomes a business. Wherever there is business involved, there are always legal concerns. This is where music contracts come into play.

Frequently musicians are distracted with developing their skills and they end up waiting until things become really serious and they finally realize the size of the music industry. What may start out as a group of buddies jamming together on the weeks could make you a celebrity. Before things get really serious, it is a good idea to put an agreement in writing by making a contract.

It doesn\’t matter if you have your friends working with you, contracts are still important for protecting your interests. When people begin to work professionally disputes can arise over who owns what. Unfortunately this happens often with unexperienced people and the business can fall apart. A profitable music business is lost even though these issues might have been simply avoided. If a contract had been established perhaps there would have been no problems.

Having a contract agreement does not imply a lack of trust, it simply means that you are explaining facts of your working relationship in writing. Music contracts come in many different varieties that can be determined amongst several parties. The parties involved may be musicians, agents, or perhaps record companies. All these parties may profit or lose from the working relationship.

The bottom line is that any parties working together, can only guarantee that their wishes will be honored by writing your business dealings in a contract. This is the simplest way that everyone will have the same idea of what they are getting in involved with from the start because it is clearly defined. This is also a important suggestion because you can\’t always defend your position in court by referring to an oral contract.

Customer Review:

Sonos Setup was pretty easy and I can hear my iTunes to a hi-fi to fifteen minutes, using your iPod as a remote control.
I had a problem with access to the iTunes stored on the NAS. This way you can listen to music without computers. Sonos easily find all the songs on the U.S., but had problems with metadata. SONOS support guys gave excellent service and I managed to solve my problem.
I think buying another ZonePlayer time control of music in other areas of the house.

BuyingSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Laughingly Easy

When I first started looking into wireless streaming, I didn’t intend to spend that much money. I had read a lot of good things about the Sonos products but I also noticed they were quite expensive compared to the alternatives I was considering, the Squeezebox and Airport Express. However, the more I researched, the more appealing was the Sonos, and I wound up purchasing this unit, the ZoneBridge and the Controller 200. I have absolutely no regrets!

The products themselves are of obviously high quality and are attractive. The instructions are brief and there is no need for them to be otherwise; they are very easy to understand, as well. Software loaded quickly and with no problems. Hookup was similarly simple. It took very little time to set up everything and it worked perfectly right from the start. I love it.

It does exactly what it says it does – Rhapsody and Pandora, the two services I use, work flawlessly and it also streams music from my hard drive to the main stereo. The reason I titled my review laughingly easy is because I just have to laugh (with joy) at how easy it is to use, how simple it is to set up, and how well it works. And also, just how nice it all is to stream music to the stereo. Everything is perfect. I am really glad I bought it!

heapSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Amazing Product – Worth Every Penny

This system is, in one word, amazing. I recently built a new house and had the house wired for ceiling speakers. However, the part of my system that was lacking was in control. I picked up this unit to be the main control “station” for the sound system around my house.

This unit literally takes a few minutes to setup. It couldn’t be easier. I had no problems connecting it to the internet and I was listening to music within minutes. My wife and I use the iPhone app on our iPhones to control the music while we’re in the house. I also use the Sonos software at my computer when I am working in my home office. Everything works flawlessly, every single time. The pre-programmed internet radio stations are great, and I put it my zip code and it instantly came up with all of my local FM/AM radio stations as well! How great.

Bottom line – I can’t recommend Sonos enough. I am “gadget” guy and I can tell you that its worth every single penny. The few areas of my house that are not currently wired for sound I am going to have setup with additional Sonos units and speakers soon.

If you’re hesitating, don’t Just get it. You’ll love it.

CheapestSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Why did I wait so long?

While researching speaker systems like the Bose Soundock etc. I kept reading, “if I had the money, I’d get Sonos, but…” Those sorts of comments just make me move along but after a few more I had to know what kind of money we were talking about. Yes, at first blush the system price is a large investment but considering what “stereo” systems used to go for and all the equipment I already own I chose to look further. I am REALLY HAPPY I did.

I already have very nice receiver, speaker system etc. for surround sound with TV etc. so I decided to try this ZP90 as a solo piece to corral the digital music and make use of the existing equipment. Put the software on the computer, plugged the unit into the internet and the receiver and the magic happens. For me it was just that easy – WOW! We are thrilled with the system and this unit and after a time we expanded to the S5 (looks like the Bose Soundock). It attached to the system using its wireless and after adding the zone, we are good to go with that. So all set with just the 2 pieces right now and enjoying it very much.

I already had an Ipod Touch so I use that as the controller if the computer is not on or I am using the S5 away from the main area. The Sonos scanned the music on the computers, and the NAS (network hard drives) no problem and play from either source easily.

SaveSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

the perfect way to stream your mp3’s from your nas

the sonos is just perfect. installing was a breeze (and when i write breeze, i do not refer to clicking this, choosing the appropriate option, then setting just half a dozen parameters or so). plugging in, inserting the cd, one or two clicks, then pressing two buttons on the device – that’s it. and together with the iphone app remote control it’s one of the best techie gadgets i have ever bought (together with the zone bridge)

Low PriceSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Best thing since sliced bread

Sonos concept is such a great idea. I can control audio all over my house from my iPhone or computer including changing source of audio (computer, tuner/amp, and anything online) and sound level. I can instantly mute when needed (phone calls). They work pretty much as described although I get occasional lapses when I’m downloading anything large from the web.

Where To BuySonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Multi room audio was never better

After thinking for a long time I finally decided to plunge in after many happy comments from others about Sonos.

I’m so happy I did buy Sonos. I can now listen to any radio station in the world. From China to Chicago and off course also our local radio stations. Controlling the system is so easy a kid 5 years old could manage it easily. Also playing music from my Buffalo live station was organized in 10 minutes, just selecting the music location on the Buffalo storage device an index was built that creates an index of all my songs. I could listen to them too using multiple search criteria like album, artist, individual songs and more.

Installing and using Sonos is a breeze. I just ordered a ZP120 as well and for my kitchen and bed room I’ve planned an S5. Even the bathroom will have one one day once I can rebuild that room from scratch too.

I love Sonos for it’s simplicity, great design.

PurchaseSonos ZonePlayer ZP90 Add-On Player

Awesome system

I ordered this after spending quite a deal of time researching on the net how to play my FLAC files that I ripped from my CD collection – MP3’s just don’t cut it for me, and I wanted to hear high quality music on my stereo. The Sonos system rocks – it was super easy to install, is connected through my home network, and plays all my FLAC’s stored on a NAS external drive also attached to my network. I bought an Ipod touch instead of the controller, and this works rather well. The sound is awesome, and I am now in the process of rediscovering a lot of my music collection that I haven’t listened to in ages. Highly recommended!

For some reason, 80s songs are still in high demand today, perhaps as much as they were during their heyday. There are few people who can live without a regular dose of music from this musical era.

Perhaps, in the morning, you want someone to wake you up before you go-go, so that you can dance like a maniac to the classic Wham song. Perhaps you still that iconic T-shirt with the words “Choose Life” on it in your wardrobe. Who can ever forget that song, let alone, the iconic video that represents all those crazy yet happy times in the 80s?

If you?re a girl, then all you pretty much wanted to do in the 80s was to have fun. All girls just wanna have fun, right? Cyndi Lauper was able to capitalize on the success of that song to have a successful career and became an 80s icon in the process. There?s no doubt that the girls can have a lot of fun when the DJ puts this song on in the nightclub.

On the other hand, the guys in the nightclub must be careful of those maneaters that lurk around. Yes, there are maneaters everywhere and Hall and Oates were right to sing about it in this classic 80s song. The fact that the song made it to number 1 in numerous countries justified their decision. There couldn’t be a more appropriate song to play at a club!

There are few who would disagree that life today is busier than in the 80s. We need a holiday more than ever before. Madonna made us crave one in the 80s and the song still does the same thing today, albeit to a greater extent. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find people preferring a holiday back to the 80s rather than to another place on Earth.

Real music legends are few and far between these days but 80s songs certainly showcased a lot of these. By simply telling us repeatedly that Billie Jean was not his lover, he cemented his spot as musical legend in the 80s. Michael Jackson eventually convinced us of that through a singing voice and dancing ability that so far remains unmatched. It’s a pity that he has now left us.

The best thing about 80s songs is that we have a medium through which we can feel the vibes, happiness and passion of such a much loved and missed musical era.

Cardif – the music capital of Wales.

Well yes, it’s also the capital of Wales, but for a small city there is a lot going on music-wise. Cardiff and Newport combined have more bands and venues per square kilometre than many a city twice their size. Talented bands from the depths of the valleys also emerge blinking in the daylight every now and again to play the capital

Bet you didn’t know that South Wales was also the UK birthplace of nu-metal and emo, home to bands such as Lostprophets, Funeral for a Friend and Bullet for my Valentine

Cardiff sports many venues, from the usual 150-capacity pub to the internationally renowned Millennium stadium which can house over 60,000 people for a gig. In between there are a wealth of cosmopolitan bars, student venues, converted churches and all manner of halls where South Wales can play host to their own talent and the many visiting bands who want a piece of Welsh action.

In Cardiff, one of the smallest venues has to be the Buffalo Bar, although that doesn’t mean it’s one of the least popular. No, the Buffalo Bar is still one of the places to be ’scene’ amongst Cardiff’s better-off 20-somethings. Its younger brother, 10 Feet Tall, also showcases a range of local bands and regular club nights, and a wider clientele.

Another bijou venue is Clwb Tafod, in the bowels of the Riverbank Hotel on the banks of the Taff opposite the Millennium Stadium. Previously home to Cardiff’s crazy rock and metal night, Fuel, which didn’t take long to outgrow the venue, it now hosts eletronicness and various DJs.

Several pubs put on gigs regularly, such as Callaghan’s, O’Neill’s and Dempsey’s in the city centre. Dempsey’s rent their upstairs bar to various young, budding musical entrepreneurs and fortnightly to roaming indie night ‘Twisted by Design’.

Cardiff University has three ‘rooms’ of varying sizes for their gigs – CF10, Solus and The Great Hall (and that’s only if this year’s influx of students hasn’t voted to change the venues’ names again). Tommy’s Bar provides UWIC students with their fill of bands with regular gigs from promoters The Family.

The best known venues in the city centre for live music must be the Barfly, Clwb Ifor Bach (aka The Welsh Club) and Cardiff International Arena. The Barfly is the smallest of the three, underground with a single stage. But being part of the Barfly group with six venues across the country, it is never short of the latest headliners.

Clwb Ifor Bach has three floors and two stages, the middle floor usually being used as backstage or a chillout room on dance nights. It puts on a huge variety of gigs and is also available to rent for promoters wishing to put on their own bands.

Cardiff International Arena hosts large, well known touring bands from the UK and abroad. Sometimes they feel the need to seat their audiences, and not only for those bands where the fans would have trouble standing up for longer than an hour.

The Coal Exchange and The Point are both Cardiff Bay venues, by Mount Stuart Square. The Coal Exchange is currently undergoing repairs or refurbishment, and will be closed until 2009. Which is a shame as it’s a good sized venue, somewhere between the size of the University’s CF10 and the CIA. Although Cardiff has a good range of venues it’s lacking in ones of this size.

The Point is a converted church and for some inexplicable reason makes for a fantastic venue. The stage is more than big enough for a venue of its size, everyone gets a good view, and it always inspires a rather good atmosphere. It’s larger than the Barfly or a single floor of Clwb Ifor Bach so you get room to move (and breathe without inhaling someone else’s hair).

Newport has its share of good niche venues too. Following the demise of the original Mauringer pub and its rock dukebox, Le Pub on Caxton Place is now the only place with an ‘alternative’ dukebox. Gigs aplenty are held upstairs in the rather unsuitably shaped bar, where no one can see the band unless they are seven feet tall or standing in the front row.

TJ’s is the infamous venue at which Kurt Cobain was supposed to have proposed to Courtney Love. Lucky it has had a major facelift which although an improvement to the levels of human comfort, may have detracted from its pure punk charm.

Newport Arena is the larger venue for the town with a capacity of about 1500. This place was hopping in the heyday of Funeral for a Friend and Goldie Lookin’ Chain but now seems to be remarkably quiet apart from appearing in the locally filmed Doctor Who, maybe even shut.

Cardiff does have just about all the types and sizes of venue you could hope to find in one place, although there’s plenty of room for one of about 300-500 capacity…

Music business has changed a lot with upcoming technologies. One can find these changes in the form of traditional business models or hike in sales of CD’s whereby changes have provided new artists, independent artists, labels and music companies with new opportunities.
Today, the music industry has the benefits of selling music online, wireless technologies, develop online record company, and open an online music store.

Availability of digital music downloads directly from the internet to the hard drives of computers has raised the issue of music piracy. There are thousands of websites providing free music download services. There are legal music download sites whereby they allow you to download songs when you pay a minimal charge in return. You can compare these sites and find which allows you to download music at the most competitive rates.

You can find the difference between different music download programs with the help of file sharing programs. The question is that really these music download programs are free or not? Many of these music download programs have lots of ad wares, spy wares and pop-ups that you should be cautious of. The difference between file sharing and free file sharing program is that with the payment you make. Programs like MP3 advance, mp3 music subscription provide you with technical support, security from popup, spy wares, privacy protection and money back incase you are not happy with the program.

Because of illegal copying of music files and sales in the market many music companies have brought law suits but still many file sharing program allows users to be anonymous. People are confused as to the legacy of free music downloads. They still think that which place of the website allows downloading and burning of free music. Is file sharing legal and after downloading are they at any risk? Therefore, you should avoid different file sharing programs like P2P, KaZaa, Limeware which allows free downloads but violate copyright laws. These downloads are songs from the CD put on the internet by people not having rights from the company or authorized music company.
