School Video #05 2007 (2) Student Ethnic Dance Program Crest Hill, IL

School Video #05 2007 (2) Student Ethnic Dance Program Crest Hill, IL This series of videos demonstrates the use of traditional ethnic dance as a learning opportunity for youth in primary and secondary schools. Ethnic dance programs help generate awareness in students that we all come from different backgrounds with different customs and traditions and that there is richness in these differences. These programs also help students establish connections with lessons learned in history, geography, music, culture and physical education. Ethnic dance programs are an excellent form of physical activity, promote good health, cultural awareness and help fight obesity. Program lengths range between one day and one week. Program outcomes are designed to fit the needs of an organization. These videos show highlights of the last day of a five-day program. During the week, students learn a between four and six ethnic dances during their normal class time. There are unique dances presented to each class and a set of common core dances learned by all classes. On the last day, students perform for a school assembly during the day and for parents and families at the school’s international festival in the evening. Each class selects two of their unique dances to present. All classes perform the common core dances. This program took place from February 28-March 10, 2007 More info at: www.ethnicdance.org

College Scholarships Offered By The Music Industry

Education is the key for a successful career, which is why it is the primary responsibility of all parents to send their children to school. Although education is a necessity, not all parents are able to fund their children schooling. Others usually stop after they graduate from high school.

This is truly happening in almost any part of the world, and according to statistics, the number is increasing year after year. And this is probably why the government and other private organizations are looking for ways to give scholarships to capable students with limited financial resources.

Students are not alike; in fact, each individual has his/her own distinct characteristic and talent. Some students have talents in the arts, dancing, singing, and music. Now, there are scholarships for particular fields of interest. And if you do love music very much, there are a lot of scholarships for college music.

Music is very popular, and many students are becoming interested in this certain area. Although some parents may not like their children to pursue a career in music (because what they want is a more stable career), students have a choice.

Here is a list of some of the music scholarships available for students:

1.Vocal scholarship from Bel Canto; this foundation awards over $15,000 to opera singers with ages ranging from 20-37 who want to pursue an opera career in America

2.John Lennon program for BMI scholarship; this is a scholarship awarded to songwriters who are able to write original compositions. But you can only take advantage of this scholarship if you are invited

3.Scholarship award by String Magazine; this is open for students who are currently in undergraduate program; the award is usually based on academic merit, community service and financial need.

4.FAME also awards college scholarships for students who are nominated for professional achievement for senior college students.

The internet can provide you with a wide range of music scholarship resources. There are different websites which you can visit, and once you’re in their site, see what requirements are needed in order to qualify for the scholarship.

Almost any big university offers a form of scholarship, check with their registrar for scholarship information. There are universities in your local area, take time to visit them. It would be best if you make a list of the different college scholarships awarded to students with interest in music.

Music is a field of interest which only very few individuals take interest. So if you’re one of the few people struggling to get a college degree in music, begin your search for the scholarship. If you think, you can pass the required qualifications, go and take the chance.

Like any other student dreaming of a life in college, you should not be discouraged by the difficulty that you’re now facing. People have problems, and that can’t be avoided.

Financial constraints are not enough to stop you from getting that college education. Choose the best option available for you. This is your way to a dazzling career in the near future.

You are a gifted individual. Share your talent with other people, and show them your love for music. And who knows, you might just be the one that the music industry is waiting for all these years.

Trivium and Slipknot ? Their Part in Rock Music Industry

Trivium and Slipknot are new age heavy metal bands who have made their own indelible footprints in the rock music field. Unique music styles set them apart from other heavy metal exponents.

Slipknot was formed in the state of Iowa in 1995 and the band came to international limelight with its first album, the Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat, in 1996. The theme of the songs depicted anger and frustration. It became an immediate hit as it empathized with the mindset of younger generation. New music styles combined with newer and forceful themes provided for the instant success of the album.

If the first album gave visibility to the band, the second one, titled Slipknot itself, put the band in the stratosphere. It was released in 1999 and was marketed nationally and internationally by Roadrunner Records, the music record giant of our times. The album acquired platinum status too. Vol 3 (The Sublimal Verses) came out as the third album from Slipknot and sales were highly satisfactory. The fourth album, produced in 2005 and came under the name 9.0 Live, is the last offering from Slipknot. Now the band is releasing the next album, which, it seems from promotional releases, is one step ahead of its older releases in uniqueness. Here, melody is mated to heavy metal to form a heady mix.

The band takes great pains to make their albums worthy to its name. The huge gaps between different releases help increase content quality and also customer curiosity. The marketing relationship between the band and Roadrunner Records still stand. The band was earlier known as The Pale Ones, Meld and Pyg System before assuming the current name.

Trivium albums are second to none in the heavy metal music arena. The band, based in Orlando, Florida is sometimes referred to as the king of heavy metal. They have released four albums so far, in addition to ten single songs and several music videos. The first album was a demo record, recorded and released in 2003. The second title produced in 2004, Ascendancy, put the band amongst the top players in the field. Some songs in the album got into chart toppers list too, and the music industry honchos were very forthcoming in their praise to the band.

The album was re-released in 2006 after adding four more records to the already popular numbers. The last album from Trivium stables came out in October 2008 by the name Shogun, has earned a lot of interest, and sales volumes are also great.

Rock Music industry has become richer with the conception of such bands like Trivium and Slipknot. They have given an additional means of entertainment to the masses yearning for something new and varied. The huge fan following of these bands make sure that newer avenues of heavy metal music still exist to be explored and brought out.

Get Creative To Find Music Production Jobs

So you’ve got that degree in Music Production – but after months of scouring the want ads, you’re beginning to wonder if you shouldn’t have backed it up with a minor in Education. Don’t despair yet – you’re a creative person or you wouldn’t have chosen this business to begin with. The secret to finding and getting music production jobs is to use some of that creativity in your job search.

There are three things to keep in mind when doing a creative job search for music production jobs:

1. As many as 90% of the jobs in any media occupation never get advertised through regular channels. The music production companies get enough over the transom resumes that they can pick and choose without advertising.

2. In many music production jobs, networking will be a key part of your job description. If you can’t network to get a job, you’ll have a hard time convincing a hiring manager that you can do the job.

3. Sometimes the best way to get your foot in the door is to intern for a music production company. According to a recent survey conducted by CareerExposure, 94% of employers have offered a full time job to interns when their internship was finished.

Keeping those three things in mind, you can put together a creative music productions job search that will land you the position that you want using the following blueprint.

1. Do your homework. You should know the music production jobs that you’re going after inside out. Read up on the web, visit the library and bookstores and find out all that you can.

2. Start applying your networking skills. Make a list of people you know who may be able to help you. Don’t forget to include people like your ex-teachers, business acquaintances and people you know through other people. Did you do sound levels for a band? Have you interned for a publisher? Have you got a chance to attend a media symposium? Those are all important contacts for you when you’re trying to network your way into music production jobs.

Boldness is an important skill to cultivate here. Ask for letters of introduction, or for permission to use someone’s name when you contact another. It’s amazing how quickly you’ll get results with a simple statement like, “Hi, Mr. Producer, my name is Interested Party. My professor, Ms. In-The-Know suggested that I call you when I told her that I’m interested in an internship with your company. Do you have a few moments to talk with me about that now, or is there a better time to call you?”

3. All right, you’re not quite that bold? There are several different methods of approach you can use to contact people who hold the keys to music production jobs.

- Mail is the most traditional method. Once you’ve researched enough to know what companies you want to work for, and who makes hiring decisions there, you can mail a resume along with an excellent cover letter. Chances are though, that you’ll have to follow up on your initial mail. Remember point #1 above – music production companies get loads of over the transom resumes.

- Email is a second option, and is a reasonable way to follow up as well. If you’ve sent your resume by mail, wait a few days and then follow up with an email to the hiring manager stating that you’re following up on your mailed resume and are very interested in discussing possible career options within his or her company. If you haven’t, send a cover letter and resume via email, and follow up in a few days with a second email.

- Telephone calls may be scary, but they are one of the quickest ways to get through to the person you want to speak with. Keep in mind that your phone call is an interruption to the hiring manager’s day – be pleasant, be brief and be direct.

The secret to finding and getting music production jobs is being bold enough to get yourself out there and sell your skills and abilities. With only 10% of the available jobs ever being offered openly in the classifieds, it’s the only way that you’ll ever know what music production jobs are available.

From Work At Home Guitar Teacher To Full Music School

Andrew James Hymel is the owner, proprietor, and music director of Andy Hymel School of Music in Gretna, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. It is a success story that has blossomed from one man’s dream of music education into a consortium of teachers and students who strive for excellence and value the importance of the preservation of the arts in today’s New Orleans.

When asked about his Post Katrina experience, Hymel relied, “It was scary to reopen the school and it was like starting over, but I felt the community needed something to use as an outlet for the emotions caused by Katrina. We weren’t just rebuilding a music school; we were rebuilding the minds and souls of our students and their families.”

Andy Hymel earned a degree in Jazz Performance from Loyola

University in New Orleans, LA. At a young age, his musical talents developed from “jamming” with neighborhood musicians in the Algiers area, notably Frank Saucier, a regular solo artist at Kerry’s Irish Pub in the French Quarter. In the 80’s, he honed his guitar skills at the World’s Fair with the vocal group “Celebration” and is to this day appreciative of that opportunity.

While his music accomplishments were self-developed, his community involvement and business acumen were mostly inspired by his dad.

His father, Lloyd Hymel, is a pillar of the Algiers community and an elder of Saint Andrews the Apostle Church. He was Chairman of the West Bank Chamber of Commerce, President of the Petroleum Club and the West Bank Rotary Club, and Vice President of AMF Tuboscope in Harvey, Louisiana.

One of his brothers, Philip Hymel, is the Chief Financial Forecaster of Entergy New Orleans and recently served as President of the University of New Orleans Alumni Association. Another brother, David Hymel, is in the oil and gas business and for years organized the oil field “Chili Cook Off”; recently at Boomtown Casino and previously at Alvin Andrew Callender Naval Airforce Base in Belle Chasse, Louisiana.

Another brother, Greg, owned and operated a Zack’s Frozen Yogart franchise and is a Ginger Baker “Cream” style drummer. His is also an artist/painter and is displayed in several restauraunts in the New Orleans area. Obviously, the senior Mr. Hymel set a solid foundation for his children to excel in business and community development.

With that said, it is apparent that Andy Hymel has parlayed his strong family values and love of music instruction from a work at home business into a full blown, reputable, school of music.

Branching off from the security of working from home, Hymel first opened his school at 601 Terry Parkway in Gretna, LA, in an area commonly known as Terrytown. What started as a handful of students quickly blossomed into a full school of music with 280 students strong and has had to relocate to a larger building at 1800 Stumph Boulevard. Predominantly a guitar teacher, he also teaches piano and bass. His drum instructor, Jumpin’ Joe Gelini, graduated from Berklee School of Music in Boston, a great accomplishment considering only 2% of those who attend Berklee actually graduate. The school has a wide variety of teachers, including band directors and vocal coaches, covering several instruments and genres. Even Hymel’s high school guitar teacher from Holy Cross is on the payroll!

Mr. Hymel (not his dad Lloyd) believes that music education can start at the Pre-K level and has programs and original songs in place for the youngest of students. He also has courses geared for “Baby Boomers” as well.

In between those age groups, one of his most amazing accomplishments is that 5 of his students have received full scholarships to various schools of music and EVERY one of his 10 students who have applied to NOCCA was accepted on their first audition!

One former student begins as an understudy this fall with the Metropolitan Opera Association. Another, Alex Zander, is a published singer/songwriter. Alex is an entire story yet to be written. Stay tuned.

In addition to his accomplishments as a teacher and entrepreneur, he has written and recorded hundreds of original songs and his efforts are starting to be recognized. Most notably. the son of Clarenece “Frogman” Henry, marketing himself as Clarence “Frogman” Henry Jr. , is considering many of Hymel’s songs for his soon to be released CD.

For Andrew James Hymel this is only the start. As an unabashed Beatles fan, an admitted student of New Orleans music, and an unwavering ambassador of music education, the sky is the limit!

Whether you listen to me or not, you will certainly hear from him.
